i’m taking an intermediate fiction writing class, that i had to audition to get into. everyone submits a 3 page short story the first day of class, and if the prof likes it, you’re in.
today we read the shortest short story i’ve ever read. it’s by augusto monterroso and called “dinosaur.” it goes: When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there.
we were then given 5 minutes to come up with a paragraph creating our own continuations of the story. i’ll share mine here:
“When he woke up, the dinosaur was still there. The dinosaur wasn’t planning on leaving the boy anytime soon, for the boy had in his possession the sole antidote that would save all of the dinosaur race. The plague was an epidemic that swept the dinosaur world, and the death rate of dinosaurs was growing exponentially due to how contagious it was. However, the boy ventured to the depths of the earth to obtain the antidote, and the dinosaur knew he needed to do all he could to help the boy deliver the antidote home to all the dying dinosaurs.”
i actually wish i could keep going with the story. it was fun, but the five minutes ended a lot sooner than i thought.
